The lower blade is made of harder metal than the upper blade so doesn't need replacing as often - unless you have run over the dreddged pin or you use a lot of man made fabrics particuarly lycra.

Jane's Top Tip! to extend the life of your blades if you use a lot of man made fabrics, reduce the width of the seam allowance on the pattern before cutting out. Set the stitch width dial to your chosen seam width eg 6.5 and then skim along the edge without cutting off the fabric.
